A woman who has an abortion aborts her child. But she does not only abort her
child...
A woman who aborts her child aborts her spirit. But she does not only abort her
spirit...
A woman who aborts her spirit aborts our sisterhood.
Abortion has driven a deep wedge between us.
Women who have abortions often defend abortion. Women who have had abortions and have
come out of denial try to oppose abortion. Women who have never had abortions but who
understand the true meaning of feminism oppose abortion.
In this way, we are divided from each other.
If I tell a woman who has had an abortion that I understand what she is going through,
it is not uncommon for her to respond, Since you have not had an abortion, you don't
understand.
I ask that woman, Why can I not join in solidarity with you? Why can I not take your
suffering into my suffering? Why can I not understand?
Abortion will remain a scourge as long as it divides the dyad of mother and child in
sunder.
Abortion will remain a scourge as long as it divides a woman's body and a woman's
spirit.
Abortion will remain a scourge as long as it divides woman from woman.
Abortion will remain a scourge as long as it exists.
I hereby declare my solidarity with all women who have ever been touched by
abortion.
