II. Information Control 1. Use of deception a. Deliberately holding back information It is my understanding that the term "insider doctrine" originated in the Adventist church. It has been my experience that the extreme emphasis on Ellen White and her peculiar teachings is played down drastically until a person is deemed ready to accept them. There seems to be a subterfuge to persuade a person that White is unimportant, but that they have to sign a doctrinal statement calling her the "spirit of prophecy" in order to be baptized. In my son's case, he was given the doctrinal statement but not required to sign it. Nevertheless, he learned to follow White so religiously that when he lived in the Lifestyle Center, he tried to get others to follow it more strictly and was severely criticized for this. b. Distorting information to make it acceptable There is quite a bit of subterfuge in the church about what White taught and the source of her teachings. See next explanation. c. Outright lying There has been a tremendous scandal in recent years about White's plagiarisms. Her writings are said to be inspired directly by God. A few years back, a book entitled The White Lie was published by Walter Rea, a former SDA minister. In it, he documents that vast portions of her writings were plagiarized. It is also well known that White knew exactly what plagiarism was, because she and her husband spoke forcefully against their works being plagiarized by others. The fact of this plagiarism was kept under careful wraps until Rea revealed it. Another little known fact was that many writings attributed to White were actually compiled by close associates under her direction and then she laid claim to their authorship. When the scandal broke, it rocked the church, and 100,000 members left. Those who remained now have a rationalization for it. They say that because the writings came from God originally, they belong to Him and no one has the right to claim them exclusively. White is said to have been inspired in what she selected, and oh by the way, she really did write those things anyway. No explanation for this is given, and Rea has never been refuted. It is still claimed that White is the "spirit of prophecy." 2. Access to non-cult sources of information minimized or discouraged a. Books, articles, newspapers, magazines, TV, radio This is absolute in Lifestyle Centers. Among Adventists generally, these things are heavily discouraged. People are expected to spend their reading time with White, so that they would be too busy to read other things. b. Critical information I didn't find any examples of deliberate restrictions against critical information. They seem to prefer to ignore it. Rea has been slandered, however, and it is my understanding that Nichols, who wrote about White's strange health history and health beliefs, even though he was an Adventist in good standing, was highly criticized, and may be out of the church at this point. c. Former members No information. d. Keep members so busy they don’t have time to think This seems to be one of the major ways they have of controlling information. Although the daily life of the people is not heavily regulated as such, the Sabbath worship and the diet serve to curb access to information, due to the way in which these practices separate them from others. 3. Compartmentalization of information; Outsider vs. Insider doctrines a. Information is not freely accessible Certain information is being kept close to the chest, especially documentation about White's hypocrisies, and certain documents which are in the hands of the White Estate. Some of her books have been revised to take out the most damaging material. Over the years, most of the material has been made public. I was able to go to a local congregation and without even explaining the nature oмЅe#Р ёхIoєF,nl,nlnn n ЊG(nьn˜nTюn%. GTimes New Roman Symbol ArialTimes New RomanBITE model applied to the Seventh-day Adventist church. In examining the BITE model for this church, it is important to realize that the church has softened in recent decades. This is common in cults. In other ways, however, the serious destructive settings are still present, but not universal. I. Behavior Control 1. Regulation of individual’s physical reality a. Where, how and with whom the member lives and associates with Having church on Saturday tends to separate the members from other Christian denominations. The dietary requirements also serve to separate folks from outsiders. There is no overt restriction on associations except in Lifestyle Centers. b. What clothes, colors, hairstyles the person wears Members not allowed to wear jewelry except watches. Wedding rings are forbidden (there has been a small amount of softening on this point in a few places). Women not allowed to wear makeup. Ellen G. White, their prophetess, used to preach against certain hairstyles; that is no longer an issue. White also preached against certain clothing and mandated others. She also preached that wearing wigs would cause serious damage to the brain, and similar teachings. Her teachings are no longer followed. c. What food the person eats, drinks, adopts, and rejects Strict veganism strongly pushed. d. How much sleep the person is able to have In Lifestyle Centers (which are the destructive settings, in my opinion), the entire day is regimented, sleep included. I saw no evidence that people were deprived of adequate rest in an extreme way. e. Financial dependence No evidence for this. f. Little or no time spent on leisure, entertainment, vacations In Lifestyle Centers, there is definite milieu control. Radio and television are not allowed. There is no opportunity for leisure as far as I can determine. All Adventists walk in the early morning for exercise. I see no evidence that Adventists act independently in choosing exercise. In my opinion, the diet weakens the body enough so that walking is about all most people can do. 2. Major time commitment required for indoctrination sessions and group rituals In Lifestyle Centers, the entire day is devoted to this. Since training courses are six months, this is not a summer camp situation. 3. Need to ask permission for major decisions No information. 4. Need to report thoughts, feelings and activities to superiors No information. 5. Rewards and punishments (behavior modification techniques- positive and negative). Members are taught that if they do not go to church on the Sabbath, they will receive the Mark of the Beast of Revelation and be doomed to annihilation at death. Ellen White also taught that if you die with meat in your stomach, you will be annhilated. She taught that eating meat causes persons to be violent like animals. Nowadays, the church couches the message more in terms of improved health, yet the diet can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies, as I shall outline in detail. I have been told that Adventists suffer disproportinately from certain mental degenerative diseases due to Vitamin B12 deficiency. In my personal experience, Adventists do not supplement for these deficiencies. 6. Individualism discouraged; group think prevails The dietary restrictions, dress, exercise, biblical interpretation, weight placed on the prophetess, complex doctrinal views, etc. are all very much group think. 7. Rigid rules and regulations Sabbath keeping, dietary restrictions are the main ones. 8. Need for obedience and dependency. Ellen White used prophecies to keep members of her husband's congregation in line. Her writings are littered with her personal attacks on recalcitrant people. The church has softened considerably from the way it was while she was alive. People are still expected to follf my interest, check out many different volumes of White's works, on indefinite loan. However, I cannot get ahold of everything that interests me. b. Information varies at different levels and missions within pyramid Unlikely to any great extent. c. Leadership decides who "needs to know" what Unlikely. 4. Spying on other members is encouraged a. Pairing up with "buddy" system to monitor and control b. Reporting deviant thoughts, feelings, and actions to leadership No evidence of any of this. 5. Extensive use of cult generated information and propaganda a. Newsletters, magazines, journals, audio tapes, videotapes, etc. Ellen White's books are heavily emphasized, and people are encouraged to build a library of them and study them. There are approximately fifty volumes total. When my son was involved, he was loaned a copy of a videotape set called "Keepers of the Flame." I was able to watch these. They are full of half truths. I have an article on my web site that discusses this. They also publish several magazines, including one in support of freedom of religion that I can read in my local law library. b. Misquotations, statements taken out of context from non-cult sources No information 6. Unethical use of confession a. Information about "sins" used to abolish identity boundaries b. Past "sins" used to manipulate and control; no forgiveness or absolution Another significant doctrine is that of Investigative Judgment. According to this doctrine, Jesus moved from one apartment [sic] of heaven to the other to open the record books and investigate the records of all people. In these books are recorded the good and evil deeds of everyone. If a person's good deeds outweigh the bad, he gets into heaven. If the other way around, he will be annihilated at death. The main good deed is keeping the Sabbath. There is no forgiveness available for the asking. I should make note of the fact that the Adventist church is currently divided into two camps: the evangelicals and the fundamentalists. The evangelicals appear superficially to be much like any Protestant group. In practice, they are simply more clever at hiding their devotion to White. The fundamentalists are hard core White followers. The term "grace" has been redefined by the group. (Redefinition of words is a common cult characteristic). I was told that "grace" means the God-given ability to keep the Ten Commandments like Jesus did (i.e. being able to keep the Sabbath.) There is no hint that we are forgiven just by asking God. III. Thought Control 1. Need to internalize the group’s doctrine as "Truth" a. Map = Reality b. Black and White thinking c. Good vs. evil d. Us vs. them (inside vs. outside) Ellen White's writings are permeated with the idea that earth's history is all about a gigantic war between Christ and satan. Her most famous book, The Great Controversy, is built around that idea. White makes frequent references to the idea that if you deviate, it is satan attacking you. I observed my own son begin to talk in these terms. Adventists strongly preach that only sabbathkeepers will be saved. The Sabbath is on Saturday; observing Sunday is strictly forbidden and a sign of apostasy. The church is highly critical of the Roman Catholic church (us vs. them) and claims that the church passed laws mandating Sunday worship to entrench paganism in the population, and that the church is apostate and the whore of Babylon. Adventists will be kind to outsiders, but if you get underneath the skin, you quickly learn that they believe that you are lost if you do not join them and keep the Sabbath. 2. Adopt "loaded" language (characterized by "thought-terminating clichщs"). Words are the tools we use to think with. These "special" words constrict rather than expand understanding. They function to reduce complexities of experience into trite, platitudinous "buzz words". White's phraseology is heavily used this way. Also, they have peculiar interpretations of certain key Bible passages, and followers learn to recall from memory the official explanation of a verse upon hearing it. My son was unable to read the Bible for several years without having this problem, once he left. Other former members have told me they have the same problem. The most blatant example of this was the reference to the Mark of the Beast of Revelation, as previously described, ignoring the fact that Revelation makes it plain that the Mark of the Beast deals with commerce, not day of worship. Adventists have peculiar interpretations for much of the Bible's prophetic writings. See also my explanation of the redefinition of the word "grace." 3. Only "good" and "proper" thoughts are encouraged. 4. Thought-stopping techniques (to shut down "reality testing" by stopping "negative" thoughts and allowing only "good" thoughts); rejection of rational analysis, critical thinking, constructive criticism. a. Denial, rationalization, justification, wishful thinking As already discussed. b. Chanting c. Meditating d. Praying e. Speaking in "tongues" f. Singing or humming No evidence of the use of any of these in that fashion. 5. No critical questions about leader, doctrine, or policy seen as legitimate White is above reproach. The church has continued to sweep her plagiarisms under the rug, and made a major effort to downplay this whole issue. Evidence of sexual orgies at worship meetings in the White home has been suppressed. Evidence that White was a lifelong meat eater who indulged in shellfish (also condemned by the church and by White's writings) is also downplayed or suppressed. Evidence of White's use of "visions" to condemn parishioners who wouldn't toe the party line has been suppressed. No attempt was made to answer my own questions. They were simply ignored. When my son was critical of the leadership of the Lifestyle Center for failing to adhere strictly to White's teachings (rather than their own modified practices), he was heavily criticized and almost banished. 6. No alternative belief systems viewed as legitimate, good, or useful As already discussed. All Christians that do not worship on the Sabbath are apostate. IV. Emotional Control 1. Manipulate and narrow the range of a person’s feelings. 2. Make the person feel like if there are ever any problems it is always their fault, never the leader’s or the group’s. 3. Excessive use of guilt a. Identity guilt 1.Who you are (not living up to your potential) 2.Your family 3.Your past 4.Your affiliations 5.Your thoughts, feelings, actions 6.Social guilt 7.Historical guilt My son and I saw extensive evidence that members were very hard on themselves for not living up to the standards, and for being negative. I don't know the mechanism that was used to achieve this. I mostly observed the change in my son during this time. He became a total stranger. He gave up his career plans (he is a highly gifted musician) in favor of a plan to become a missionary to spread White's health message of veganism. He became irritable and morose. He no longer had a sense of humor. He became extremely self-centered (formerly he had been generous to a fault). 4. Excessive use of fear a. Fear of thinking independently Attempts at prompting independent thought on my part were listened to politely, but it went in one ear and out the other. If I started to become threatening, they found any excuse to stop talking to me. b. Fear of the "outside" world c. Fear of enemies The main fear that is generated is fear of satan. Everything bad is an attack from satan. If you fail, you are being harassed by satan. White's writings are dark with her personal fear of satan. I found it easy to tell which part of her writings were NOT plagiarized. They were the sections that fixated on satan. Just reading them made ME feel trapped in satanic darkness. d. Fear of losing one’s "salvation" This is probably the major one. If a person stops observing the Sabbath, he is condemned. Former Adventists have all told me that keeping the Sabbath is the last thing to go, and many former members continue to worship on the Sabbath and seek out Sabbath-keeping churches long after they have rejected all of the rest of it. e. Fear of leaving the group or being shunned by group f. Fear of disapproval 5. Extremes of emotional highs and lows. 6. Ritual and often public confession of "sins". 7. Phobia indoctrination: programming of irrational fears of ever leaving the group or even questioning the leader’s authority. The person under mind control cannot visualize a positive, fulfilled future without being in the group. a. No happiness or fulfillment "outside"of the group b. Terrible consequences will take place if you leave: "hell"; "demon possession"; "incurable diseases"; "accidents"; "suicide"; "insanity"; "10,000 reincarnations"; etc. The main consequences will be that satan won in your life and will rule you, and you are doomed to annihilation. c. Shunning of leave takers. Fear of being rejected by friends, peers, and family. Mixed. Once my son left, his wife's family did everything in their power to break up their marriage. Eventually they succeeded. I have no evidence that the other Adventists shunned him. d. Never a legitimate reason to leave. From the group’s perspective, people who leave are: "weak"; "undisciplined"; "unspiritual"; "worldly"; "brainwashed by family, counselors"; seduced by money, sex, rock and roll.
